    1-800-BAND’s Would You Believe It?

Endless Picnic is, like, totally stoked to announce their FIRST! MUSIC! VIDEO! The clip, for Brooklyn’s beloved toll-free rockers 1-800-BAND, was directed and shot by The Picnic’s Dave Cavallo (aka “me”) and cut and graded by our fabulous in house edit-bot Alex Ricciardi. A mix of modern and retro influences that were discussed over lengthy sessions (at the band’s favorite bar, where else?) I think the vid does the band justice. (To tell you the truth, it brings a tear to me eye, as it reminds me a bit of the days when MTV actually played…music videos.) Enjoy!

EPISODE 14! EPISODE 14! So good we recorded it twice. (Except the first time the recorder wasn’t working.)

Of course that doesn’t mean you have to listen to Dave and Adam talk about “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” and “Tree of Life” twice. (Unless you really want to.) (More …)

Hey there film fans, Dave Cavallo here–the other Me Like Movie podcaster–filling in for the vacationing Adam. This week, on our “lucky” “Episode” “12A,” we do our traditional Oscar prelim–OK, it’ll be a tradition in like five years–and, more excitinglingly*, discuss the atavistic tendencies of directors Michael Havananivicus (not his real name) and the legendary Woody Allen. A Profile of Jesse Flower-Ambroch, Sound Designer

Here’s a neat video we’re happy to share with everyone: a profile of our in-house sound mixer and designer extraordinaire, Jesse Flower-Ambroch, produced by Endless Picnic. As you’ll see, Jesse’s travelled the world–quite literally–in search of sound. It was directed by Tyler Cartner, shot by David Cavallo (that’s me!), edited and color corrected by Alex Ricciardi, and, you guessed it, mixed by JFA himself.

‘East of Broadway’ 5D to 35mm Film-out Test – Part One: The Shoot

As Endless Picnic reaches its first year anniversary, more and more feature films shot with HDSLRs are making their way to theatrical release. But aside from the occasional big budget Hollywood project that incorporates 5D or 7D footage (Black Swan, 127 Hours, Captain America, etc.) most are shown digitally, and rarely get transferred to film and projected.

Given that, I’m extremely happy to report that we’re in the middle of a truly exciting project: transferring test footage I shot on the Canon 5DMKII with a small crew in NYC, to a 35mm print stock, to be followed by a comprehensive evaluation of the results as projected on the BIG screen at Goldcrest Post in NYC.

Why the test? It’s for the exciting indie feature film East of Broadway Endless Picnic is producing with Hostage International, starring Haaz Sleiman, scheduled to begin production in February 2012.

    Now on to the details…

    PHASE ONE: TEST PREP

Given the limited production time and budget alloted for the tests–as well as a significant cap on the amount of footage that would be transferred to film, only 6 minutes–I knew I had to choose what to evaluate very carefully, and be as rigorous in my methods as possible.

At first, this seemed remarkably daunting. Where would I start? With something tried and true, like sharpness/resolution tests of DSLR lenses? If so, Canon zooms versus primes? Zeiss primes versus Canon primes? Or how about full frame sensor depth of field tests? (More …)

    Marshall False Color IRE issue

As those of you who follow our Endless Picnic blog probably know, we’re big fans of Marshall monitors. We love both the 7″ LCD70XP-HDMI and the 5″ V-LCD50-HDMI, which shine for all sorts of reasons, especially with our Canon 5DMKIIs.

One of the most of useful features of both models is the False Color mode, which we’ve seen become popular throughout the industry as a quick and useful exposure guide for HD cinematography, both on our Marshalls and on RED One’s monitor.

But recently when reviewing some 5D footage, our colorist/editor Alex Ricciardi mentioned that he’d noticed some discrepancies when comparing the Marshall False Color scale and Apple Color’s Waveform monitor: it appeared that the False Color IRE scale was reading about 10 IRE too high when compared to the software scopes. Knowing how much I rely on the False Color scale for proper exposure, I decided to investigate.

I began by doing some casual tests around our office (More …)
